Understanding Acme Threads

One of the most common questions we receive concerns Acme threads and whether products from different manufacturers are compatible. While Acme threads have been an industry standard for many years, there are several variations in use, and not every product will fit every pole or accessory without an adaptor.

The Acme thread was originally developed in the United States during the late nineteenth century as a stronger and more practical alternative to the traditional square thread. Its broad, angled profile provides a secure connection, resists wear, and is well suited to equipment that is repeatedly assembled and dismantled. The name Acme comes from the Greek word akmē, meaning the highest pointpeak, or perfection—an appropriate name for what was considered the optimum thread design of its day. Over time, it became the accepted standard for attaching tools to extension poles across many industries, including professional window cleaning.

Most professional window-cleaning equipment manufacturers, including Ettore, Unger, Moerman, Pulex, and others, use some form of Acme thread to connect tools such as brushes, gutter-cleaning tools, dusting equipment, and pad holders to extension poles. However, each manufacturer may interpret the standard slightly differently, resulting in small variations in thread depth, length, or the way the fitting seats. In most cases, these differences are minor, but they can occasionally affect compatibility. If you are in any doubt, choosing tools from the same manufacturer as your pole will usually ensure compatibility.

You may also come across accessories described as Universal Thread or Acme-Compatible. These terms generally indicate that the fitting is designed to work with most professional extension poles, although there may still be exceptions.

The good news is that the vast majority of today's professional equipment is designed with compatibility in mind.

If you are unsure whether a particular tool or accessory will fit your extension pole, we're always happy to help.
