Take Your Spring Cleaning to a Higher Level – here's how

Spring has always been associated with giving your home a thorough clean — which is why it’s known as spring cleaning, of course.

But have you ever found that, after thoroughly cleaning out the areas you can easily get at, you end up leaving the dust and cobwebs up on the high beams and ledges?

You’re not alone. But these places need to be cleaned too, and it’s easy enough if you have the right tools. Here at The Windowclean Centre we supply the tools you need for high-level spring cleaning.

Extension Poles

In order to dust at a high level, you need your various brushes to fit onto an extension pole long enough to access those heights. We supply aluminium and carbon fibre poles of anything from 0.6 to 9 metres.

In general, you’re unlikely to need anything longer than 1.5 metres for domestic use. However, there are exceptions. For example, if your home is a barn conversion that still has an apex to the roof, you may well need an extension pole length that’s normally only used in industrial buildings.

Of course, getting your brush up to the height is only half the battle. You also need to be able to have it level with the ledge or top of a beam, and for that you’ll need a high reach duster that has an angled joint.

Oval Brushes

Oval brushes, such as the Unger Wall and Fan Brush, are bristles wrapped in a wire frame that can be adjusted for different uses. The bristles are an equal mix of nylon and natural horse-hair. The horse-hairs, from horses’ tails, are stiff but won’t scratch the surface.

An oval brush can be used for ledges, but they’re particularly useful for dusting walls and circulating fans, where they slide effortlessly over the individual wings.

Ostrich Feather Dusters

Sometimes described as the “queen of feather dusters”, ostrich feather dusters provide efficient and eco-friendly cleaning. Made from thousands of separate filaments taken from natural ostrich feathers, brushes such as the Unger Ostrich Feather Duster are not only exceptionally soft, but also retain dust very effectively.

Ostrich feather dusters are ideal for any delicate cleaning — for example, light fittings, chandeliers and pictures. They can be washed with care, as long as you leave them to air dry.

Microfibre Brushes

Microfibre brushes, such as the Unger ProCeiling Fan Duster, are extremely efficient at absorbing dust. Besides their open structure, allowing large amounts of dust to collect, they also generate a gentle static field to make the dust stick. As its name suggests, it’s ideal for cleaning fans, but it can also be used for many other surfaces.

Ceiling Fan Duster

An alternative type of microfibre brush is the Unger ProFlex75 Duster, a bendable, flat, low-profile duster that’s perfect for getting round corners. It’s perfect for dusting the tops of cupboards and wardrobes or high-level flat ledges, as well as behind radiators.

Other High-Level Brushes

These are just a few of the most useful brushes that could help you take your spring cleaning to a higher level. You might need a pipe brush, for instance, which can wrap itself around pipes, although this is mostly used in industrial settings.
